Summerside defeat Yarmouth in five games, advance in Metalfab MHL Cup Playoffs

There will be a new Metalfab MHL Cup champion in 2023-24 as the Summerside Western Capitals eliminated the Yarmouth Mariners in five games to advance to the Eastlink South Division Final.

Due to travel, the series used the 2-2-1-1-1 format, with the first two games in Summerside. In Game 1, the home time scored four times in the first period en route to a 7-3 victory over Yarmouth. Seven different players scored for the Western Capitals, who out-shot the Mariners 40-29. Yarmouth would even the series at a game apiece after a tight 4-3 win in Game 2 before the series shifted back to Mariners Centre. The teams traded goals through 40 minutes of play, with Summerside taking three different leads, but Jerome Nadeau scored the game-winner just 55 seconds into the 3rd period. Thomas Fontaine made 36 saves for the victory.

Back in Yarmouth, William Irvine opened the scoring on the powerplay late in the 1st period, but Nathan Mossey tied the game with a goal at 3:33 of the 2nd period. Paul Hughes found the back of the net at 14:38 as Summerside took a 2-1 lead into the 3rd period, where a goal at 16:17 from Jonah MacDonald and an empty net goal from Trentyn Crane just two minutes later sealed a 4-1 win and a 2-1 series lead.

Summerside took a lead just 31 seconds into Game 4 in Yarmouth with a goal from Liam Duquette and they held that 1-0 lead through two periods. Hughes made it a 2-0 Summerside lead at 3:40 of the 3rd period before Ethan Hoffe scored at 14:24 to cut the lead in half. This time it was Jonah MacDonald who scored the empty net goal in the final minute to give the Western Capitals a 3-1 win and a 3-1 series lead.

Back on home ice in Game 5, the Western Capitals opened the scoring with a goal from Robbie Rutledge at 1:55. Tyler Lee scored his first of the playoffs to tie the game, but Crane responded less than a minute later to restore the Summerside lead heading to the 2nd period. With their season on the line, Kyle McGuire and Nadeau scored in the 2nd period to give the Mariners a 3-2 lead. Hughes notched his fourth goal of the playoffs at 6:32 of the 3rd period to tie the game, which would eventually head to overtime. In the extra frame, Irvine scored his second goal of the post-season to give the Western Capitals a 4-3 win and eliminate defending champion Yarmouth.

Summerside will now face Amherst, who eliminated Pictou County just minutes after this series ended.
