Summerside (18-3-0-0) solidified their place atop the Maritime Junior Hockey League (MHL) standings last week with two victories in Edmundston (13-6-0-1) last week to run their win streak to a season-high ten games. The results catapulted the Western Capitals to 9th place in the CJHL Top 20 rankings; the lone MHL team on the list. South Shore (15-5-0-1), the Eastlink South Division leaders remain an Honourable Mention. Also, don’t look now but Pictou County (11-7-0-0) have won five straight to move into 3rd place in the Eastlink South.
The action kicks off on Thursday with two games. The Western Capitals are back home to face Grand Falls (7-10-2-1). The Rapids own one of Summerside’s three losses, picking up a 5-1 victory at home on October 4th to avenge a 3-0 loss to the Western Capitals in September. Elsewhere, Pictou County host South Shore. This could be a game decided by special teams. The Crushers have the most penalty minutes in the league by a wide margin, and the squads are in the top four in terms of powerplay percentage in the MHL.
The Lumberjacks play three games in three days this week, and hit the ice at home on Friday against Fredericton (9-8-1-0). The Red Wings had just one game last week, falling 3-2 in overtime at home to Campbellton (10-8-1-0). This is the MHL Game of the Week and free to watch on HockeyTV. Miramichi (5-12-3-1) heads back to Nova Scotia for their lone game of the week, taking on the Valley Wildcats (5-16-1-0) in Berwick. The Timberwolves bounced back from a shootout loss in Truro (6-9-1-4) last Friday with a 3-2 home win over Grand Falls. Valley dropped games to South Shore and Yarmouth before the Crushers edged them 3-2 in overtime. The Amherst Ramblers (10-9-1-0) make their third trip of the season to Yarmouth (12-7-2-1) for their fourth meeting of the season. The Mariners have taken all three so far, including a home and home series earlier this month. Finally, Edmundston make their first trip to Campbellton. The teams have split their two head to head games. The Blizzard will be looking to rebound after the two losses to Summerside, while the Tigers won two in a row after losing to Edmundston last Wednesday.
Saturday is a busy night with five games scheduled. Truro are off to northwestern New Brunswick, beginning with a matchup with the Blizzard in Edmundston. The Bearcats had just one game last week, the shootout victory over the Timberwolves. Fredericton finish off their road trip with a stop in Yarmouth. Amherst will be looking for their first win against the Crushers this season as they head to New Glasgow. South Shore is off to Berwick for a game with Valley that should have no shortage of goals. The lowest goal total in their previous four meetings is seven, and South Shore has picked up a pair of 7-4 victories over the Wildcats. Finally, Campbellton is off to Summerside. The Western Capitals are 2-1 against the Tigers this season.
This week’s action wraps up Sunday with Truro in Grand Falls.
All games are available on HockeyTV.
