It’s a busy week in the Maritime junior Hockey League (MHL) with five straight days of action and only one cross-divisional game. Summerside (15-3-0-0) enters the week ranked 14th in the CJHL’s Top 20 rankings, with South Shore (14-4-0-1) named an Honourable Mention once again. The division leaders have some big games this week, including a big road trip for the Western Capitals.
We start the action on Wednesday with an Eastlink North matchup as the Edmundston Blizzard (12-5-0-0) host Campbellton (8-7-1-0). The Tigers opened their season way back on September 15th with a 5-1 victory at Centre Jean Daigle and the two sides haven’t met since. Campbellton dropped games to Pictou County (8-7-0-0) and Summerside last weekend. The Blizzard are firmly in second place in the North, and split a home and home series with Fredericton (9-8-0-0) last week.
Thursday features four divisional games. Campbellton are on the road again, travelling to Fredericton for the first time this season. The Red Wings were shutout 3-0 in the Tigers’ home opener last month. This is the MHL Game of the Week, which is free to watch on HockeyTV. Elsewhere, Miramichi (4-11-3-0) makes another trip to Credit Union Place in Summerside. The Western Capitals beat the Timberwolves 9-4 on home ice last week. Miramichi then lost a close 5-3 decision to the Crushers. The Eastlink South-leading South Shore Lumberjacks host the Wildcats (5-14-0-0). Valley lost a close 4-3 game in Truro (5-9-1-4) before dropping a 6-3 decision to Amherst (9-8-1-0). South Shore beat Grand Falls (7-9-2-0) at home and the Bearcats in Truro. Finally, Yarmouth (11-6-2-1) makes the trek to New Glasgow to face the Crushers. The Mariners swept a home and home with the Ramblers before losing 3-2 to the Rapids. The Crushers swept the aforementioned road trip through Campbellton and Miramichi.
Four more games are scheduled for Friday Grand Falls heads to Campbellton for the Tigers third game in three days. The Rapids have taken two of three matchups thus far, all in Grand Falls, though one was in overtime. Pictou County is on the road to face Amherst. The Crushers beat the Ramblers 3-2 back in the second week of the season, and the teams will face off three times over the next three weeks. Miramichi makes a stop in Truro. This is a pivotal game for both teams who are on the outside looking in when it coems to playoff positioning early this season. The final game of the evening sees Yarmouth travel to Valley. The teams have split their season series so far, with the home team coming out on top in the two games.
On Saturday, Summerside head to Edmundston for the first of back to back games against the Blizzard at Centre Jean Daigle. The Western Capitals made a similar road trip last season. Like Yarmouth and Valley, these two teams have held serve on home ice, with Summerside leading the season series 2-1. Miramichi returns home for their third game in three nights as they host Grand Falls. Each team has an overtime win over the other. Meanwhile, Valley hope that home ice will produce a win as they face the Crushers, and Amherst look to pick up a win in Bridgewater against the Lumberjacks.
The week wraps up on Sunday afternoon with the second of back to back games between the Western Capitals and Blizzard in Edmundston.
