(FREDERICTON, NB) After an exhilarating season with the Fredericton Junior A Red Wings, Defenseman Olle Akermark has signed a letter of intent with Suffolk University. Suffolk, located in the heart of Boston is a NCAA Division III school that plays in the NEHC conference. Akermark plans on majoring in Business Economics with a minor in Sports Marketing. “I’m preparing to play hockey at my best potential for the next four years, while attaining a great education,” said Akermark, “Suffolk offers me both, with great opportunities for an education and hockey.”
Akermark joined the Red Wings this year for his first season of Jr. Hockey obtaining an Assistant Capital role, after playing four seasons at Governor’s Academy located in Newbury, MA. In his final year Akermark lead his team in the Captain leadership role. “It was a pleasure to coach Olle this season as I respected his leadership that he brought to our Red Wings team throughout the year,” said Red Wings head coach Brian Casey, “Olle is a quality young man on and off the ice, and on behalf of the coaching staff and players, we are all excited for him to be getting this opportunity to further his academics and hockey career.”Akermark looks back on his season with the Red Wings and is proud of the team that he played with. “There is no better feeling that celebrating hard earned wins with the people who become your family.”
President of the Fredericton Red Wings, Roger Shannon is saddened to lose Akermark, but is excited to see what the future has in store for him. “As much as we were looking forward to Olle’s return next season we are excited he has landed a school scholarship and wish him all the best. The Red Wings want to see our players go on to school following their time with us. Olle’s choice to forgo his final year of Junior hockey is about his opportunity to educate and play at the same time. Good luck Olle!”
